From Buddy to Boss – Successful Transition as a New Leader

Location: Hendricks County Fairgrounds

Transitioning into a new leadership position is one of the most challenging experiences anyone will face. As a new manager, you may find yourself supervising friends and former peers. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to adopt the mindset of a leader and gain new skills including communication, coaching, goalsetting and giving feedback. After attending, you’ll know how to:

  • Build a foundation for a new leadership position.
  • Communicate with former peers who are now subordinates.
  • Develop coaching skills and provide feedback.


Brad Coy is the Assistant Fire Chief of the Greenwood Fire Department. He received a Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership from Indiana Wesleyan University and a B.A. in Biology, with an emphasis in Athletic Training, from Franklin College. Brad is in his 28th year as a public servant, including 24 years with the Greenwood Fire Department. He has earned many honors including the distinguished Van Valer Service Award for Outstanding Service to the Community. A graduate of Leadership Johnson County, Brad currently serves as Past President of the Leadership Johnson County Board of Trustees.

Introverts have amazing strengths, but they can often be overshadowed in a fast-paced society focused on energy and charisma. In this workshop for introverts and those who want to better understand them, you’ll learn about introvert myths and how to leverage introversion’s innate strengths. After attending, you’ll know how to:

  • Improve communication between introverts and those around them.
  • Effectively handle conflict involving introverts.
  • Learn powerful ways for introverts to recharge their batteries.

With a background in higher education and career development, plus a Master’s in Education from the University of Dayton, she is a passionate advocate focused on engaging and empowering introverts to be the best version of themselves throughout their career journey. Stuck in what seems to be an unsolvable problem? The source of your troubles may be your approach. In this workshop, you’ll learn about challenges requiring ongoing balance instead of either/or solutions. We’ll explore Barry Johnson’s theory of polarity management, examine case studies, and practice applying concepts to real world challenges. After attending, you’ll know how to:

  • Distinguish between polarities and problems.
  • Influence others to better balance the forces in a polarity.
  • Apply the five action steps to dilemmas.

Greg Pryor is a professionally trained coach and student of Educational Psychology who focuses on helping others unfold and become who they are more fully. He brings a decade of experience in adult learning and development in one of the largest Goodwill organizations. Greg serves as the Success Coach for the Johnson County Employer Resource Network, is a licensed facilitator of Coach U’s Coaching Clinic, collaborates with the Institute for Post-Industrial Leadership at the University of Indianapolis, serves as a committee member for Leadership Johnson, and is a Birkman Certified Professional.

  • Unpack what it means to have a diverse, inclusive and equitable workplace.

Andrew Adeniyi (Ah-Dae-Nee-Yi) is a first-generation Nigerian-American with nearly a decade of executive-level management in retail operations and years of experience running his own consulting firm. He published his first book, The Circle of Leadership, in 2020. Andrew earned a bachelor’s degree in Entrepreneurship and Corporate Innovation from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University Bloomington, a Master’s in Management, Strategy & Leadership from Michigan State University, and a certificate in Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in the Workplace from the University of South Florida’s Muma College of Business.

  • Discover your social and emotional strengths and strengthen those of your teams.
  • Approach your leadership from its connection with social and emotional leadership.

Erika Petrelli Bayh has worked in developing people for more than 25 years, currently serving as The Leadership Program’s Senior Vice President of Leadership Development. She led youth leadership programming in all five boroughs of New York City for more than a decade and now trains key leadership skills across the country as a keynote speaker and featured presenter at conferences, and a trainer and coach within organizations.
